Core Conditioning is not Just Another Fitness Fad

What is the body's core?

Your body core is your body's midsection, from the groin to shoulders. Every movement you make, be it something as simple as be it combing your hair or as taxing as running a marathon, begins from the core. An unconditioned core will limit your physical capabilities. Our core muscles can be weakened due to sedentary lifestyles, and as a result we become subject to strain or injury. Even if you regularly work out or participate in sports, there's a good chance that you're not training the body core muscles.

Working the muscles in your core will improve the effectiveness of movements with your limbs. Most resistance exercise routines focus on building muscle. The idea behind training your core is to create a strong and stable base for those muscles.

So how do I strengthen my core?

There are now many different exercise routines and products that work the musculature of the core area available. Athletes can enhance their skills by working with professional trainers at customized routines. However, individuals who wish to incorporate core training into their fitness routine can also find many programs.

These exercises and products work by creating resistance and/or instability so that the core muscles must respond in order to maintain equilibrium. The exercises are relatively easy on the body while still being targeted. Beginners will quickly feel which muscles are being used. Proper form is necessary for safety and effectiveness, so it's a good idea to work with a trainer initially.

Core exercises frequently mimic moves that we employ in daily life or sports. The idea is to train the body to depend more on the core and lessen the strain on the limbs. Two forms of exercise that have become very popular lately and that develop core body strength are Pilates and the Swiss ball.

Pilates uses bodyweight as resistance. The focus is on learning to breathe properly and perform slow, controlled, very targeted movements. This allows a person to isolate and strengthen core muscles.

The Swiss ball (also known as a fitness ball or stability ball) can be an enjoyable way to strengthen the core musculature. There are a myriad of exercises that can be performed with the Swiss ball. Initially however, just sitting on it will create enough instability to engage the core muscles that maintain balance.

Good core strength is of utmost importance at every age and fitness level. Finding a way to incorporate body core conditioning into your workout routine will help you reduce fatigue, avoid muscle strain and improve your strength and mobility, without overly taxing recovery capabilities.
